Lionel Model Trains

online club Many model-train companies are named for their owners. In the case of Lionel, it was the founder Joshua Cowen's middle name (a great "secret" for any child who feels a bit iffy about his or her middle name!). Cowen came to America in the 1870s, thirty years after the "Golden Spike" united the first transcontinental American railroad and on the crest of excitement about electricity. He established his "electric express" company in 1900.

Cowen's first trains sold on the strength of his store window-displays, which so entranced spectators that they had to be reminded they could actually buy and own this exciting technology.
Rigorously detailed, Cowen's models formed a permanent link between the words "Lionel" and "train" for many American children and adults. More than one youngster, taken on a first train ride, has announced "Here comes the Lionel!"

Still a leader in the HO, O and O27 markets, Lionel models include Lionel-ville accessories that can create an entire environment in which trains can run. Over 100 years, and still running strong.
